So far I am giving Pop!OS Linux a try based off a recommendation from a friend. It seems this machine is a touch too new to have everything work, but so far the only thing I have noticed not functional are the internal Bang & Olufsen speakers. Bluetooth didn’t work until after a kernel upgrade to 6.1. I am experimenting with the XanMod Kernel (xanmod.org).
So why buy a beefy laptop? Well, a friend had one very similar to this one and recommended it to me. I had been planning to build myself what I was calling a ‘no-fan’ lab with various Orange PI, or RPI, or similar devices. In the end, for my needs and the type of stuff I want to do, having a machine that is likely capable of running several virtual machines simulatenously and even potentially a lot of containers, I should be able to do cool projects in a completely virtual situation on this single machine.
So we will see what happens now. This is the basis of my test environments. I also have some switches around here and some other HW I plan to use at different times depending on the project.
So far, I’m happy with the purchase.. and it was very reasonably priced compared to Apple machines which at this point really do not do virtualization well.
Projects on this box should be starting soon. If you find yourself interested in this feel free to ping me.
