Interests
March 5, 2026
Last week, I posted and said the schedule would be that posts would happen Fridays. This week, thats happening the evening before. No matter. At least its happening and will be there for Friday.
So on with the show…
Since I am rebooting this blog, I thought it might be a good idea to first post about my interests in technology. This will give you a sense of what sorts of posts might be coming as we go from week to week. I hope it helps people decide whether or not this might be an interesting blog to follow.
In any case, this will not be exhaustive, but will definitely be representative of my own career since it has largely followed my own interests by design.
Open Source
Open source has powered my technical career. Always a self starter, and always interested in learning new things. Open source helps that along the way.
Data Center Operations
Even though I started my work with tech when I was a kid, my first real jobs in the industry were in data center operations. I have a lot of experience in this realm from my earliest days in the industry, all the way through to current. Afterall everywhere you work in tech has some sort of data center piece, even if today its often called / is cloud. :)
Cloud Computing
I have used many different cloud platforms, both public providers and private on-prem solutions both commercial and open source. This will likely always be a fun discussion.
General Infrastructure
Infrastructure is a fact of life in technology. It can be anything from end points to data centers worth of gear and connectivity. Always fun to explore.
Automation of All Kinds
Never being one to like to do things repeatedly and over and over the same thing, I prefer to automate. I have used and created so much automation as a result of my own attitudes about it, that it remains fun and will always be something I am personally after in order to free up more time to do more things.
Security, Network and Systems in particular
More than half my career has been spent in security related areas. It never gets boring to me. Its a hoot! I’ll have plenty of posts that fall into this category.
Encryption
You can’t have security without encryption. Encryption should be everyones default position. We will dive into this often from lots of vantage points.
Cryptography
There can be no encryption without cryptography. So again, these two are attached and will likely be pieces of the same posts in the future.
Programming
I essentially collect programming languages. Whether I ever use them again after learning them is no excuse to me for not learning them. Its fun to learn languages and figure out why it was created and see how another person thinks about that problem set. In generally I’ve probably used almost every programming language that I have learned in production or in a product somewhere. Definitely not all of them though, although even in those cases, I might have been in a position to enable the teams to use it even if I couldn’t. Programming and programming languages are always fun to explore.
Scripting
Same goes for scripting, whether its shell, or an interpreted language. Scripting is programming. It used to be programmings quick and dirty little brother, but its come into its own and is really just programming now that everything that made it scripting is essentially a non-issue any longer.
It’s possible I will add topic areas in the future to this list, but these are the ones I will focus on. So next weeks post will fall into one of these categories and the fun will begin!
Until then.. happy hacking!
